ORIGINS & HERITAGE OF THE TRUCKER SWEATER
The trucker sweater first appeared in the 1930s, at a time when the zipper was just beginning to gain widespread use. This technical innovation reshaped the garment by introducing a defining feature: the zip-up collar—both protective and adjustable. Originally designed for winter sports, it met the demands of cold weather and intense physical activity. Fully zipped, it shields against wind and high-altitude chill; partially open, it allows heat to escape without removing the sweater.
Thanks to its smart design, the sweater quickly moved beyond ski resorts and became a staple for outdoor professions exposed to the elements. Sailors, construction workers, craftsmen, and road crews adopted this durable and practical piece, built for demanding conditions.
In France, it became firmly rooted in everyday life during the 1950s among long-haul truck drivers. Shifting between the cab, loading tasks, and rest stops, they valued its versatility and thermal comfort. It was then that the garment earned its now-iconic name: the trucker sweater .
The Sauzon men’s trucker sweater is crafted in the same knitting workshop as the Cancale sailor sweater, using the same materials and identical manufacturing techniques.
SAUZON: A FRENCH-MADE TRUCKER SWEATER
The Sauzon trucker sweater draws direct inspiration from the Cancale sailor sweater , featuring the same straight, slightly oversized cut designed for comfort, ease of movement, and lasting structure.
It is crafted in the same knitting workshop, certified as a Living Heritage Company (EPV), and recognized for over 40 years for its expertise in producing premium sailor sweaters.
Its pearl rib knit, made from OEKO-TEX® certified cotton, subtly alternates knit and purl stitches to create a dense, textured fabric that is both structured and naturally flexible. With a substantial weight of 1.3 kg/m², the knit immediately reflects its quality and durability.
Each panel is fully fashioned—knitted to its final shape to minimize waste and ensure a precise fit. The pieces are assembled using linking for clean, strong seams. The hem and cuffs echo the signature detailing of the Cancale sweater , providing added structure and reinforcement in high-wear areas.

For the trucker collar, we selected a benchmark in zipper craftsmanship: a polished brass zip from YKK’s Excella® line. Fully polished, it delivers exceptionally smooth operation and a refined feel against the skin.
