The Guilvinec from Bleu de Chauffe, the history of the seaman’s knit cap
From the 18th century, fishermen and seafarers wore these woolen hats, knitted in such a way as to protect them from the penetrating cold, constant humidity, and wind on long ocean voyages. These were unique and essential items, and there were different styles of hat in each region – even in each port!
Over time, this simple piece of headgear left the ocean spray to strut its stuff in town. In the 1950s it was worn by artists and dreamers, a symbol of natural simplicity and authenticity. It then became a fashion icon, adopted by those who wanted to blend style and tradition.
Our knit cap, the Guilvinec, was born out of this spirit of authenticity. Merging the history of the navigators of old with its unique design, this workwear item features our Cancale sweater’s signature pattern. The Guilvinec knit cap blends tradition, craftsmanship, and modernity.
