This new coated cotton canvas is made in Scotland by Halley Stevensons, specialists in waxed canvas since 1864. From the first canvas coated with linseed oil that they made for the sailing ships of the 19th century, to the hi-tech cotton canvas they manufacture today, Halley Stevensons have always been at the cutting edge of technical innovation, while staying true to the original spirit of the company: producing exceptional canvas that is super resistant, supple, waterproof, and that becomes more beautiful over the years.
We have chosen their 10:10 Wax C4 waxed canvas for our ‘Luggage Light’ collection – four times better waterproofing than their standard canvas. This canvas is not coated with oil, which makes it slightly dry to the touch. This lightweight, supple, strong material has a slightly ‘crazed’ look – a fine web of cracks that make it particularly stunning.
All our leather bags and all the leather components for our canvas bags are made from the finest European vegetable-tanned leather. Vegetable tanning, which uses agents from trees and plants (acacia, mimosa, chestnut), is much more ecologically-friendly than chrome tanning, which is widely used in the leather industry – despite the fact that it produces far more pollution. Vegetable tanning is a longer and more costly process, but apart from the benefit to the environment, leather tanned in this way develops a stunning natural patina over time.
Every Bleu de Chauffe bag is made by hand at our workshop in the Aveyron region, in the south west of France. Each bag is a unique item made from start to finish by a single artisan, whose signature you will find on the inside of the bag.
